Marking five years of collective action, Delta EMEA’s internal CSR initiative—the first Charity Fitness Challenge of 2025—once again united colleagues across the region for a meaningful environmental cause. While each edition supports a different organization or focus area, this year, we continued our collaboration with Reefscapers, reinforcing our commitment to coral reef restoration in the Maldives. By combining physical activity with purpose, the initiative drives long-term impact—advancing ocean sustainability, preserving marine biodiversity, and supporting local communities through the Delta EMEA Coral Reef transplantation project.

Each colleague’s effort translated into direct support for reef restoration: for every 10 kilometers logged or every hour of exercise completed, one coral fragment was donated to be transplanted onto the Delta EMEA Coral Reef. These fragments are carefully attached to specially designed frames by Reefscapers' marine experts, where they grow into resilient reef structures—supporting biodiversity and protecting vulnerable coastlines. It’s a simple, tangible way to transform everyday movement into measurable environmental progress.

Why Coral Restoration? Why the Maldives?

Coral reefs are one of the most valuable ecosystems on Earth. They provide habitats for marine life, support biodiversity, protect coastal areas, and help sustain communities that depend on the ocean. However, these ecosystems are becoming increasingly fragile—threatened by the effects of climate change, rising sea temperatures, ocean acidification, and human activity. Coral bleaching, pollution, and overfishing have already caused widespread degradation across many reef systems.

Among the many regions affected by these changes, the Maldives has shown some of the most visible signs of coral stress and decline—driven by warming waters and other human-induced factors. In response to these challenges, supporting coral restoration in this area not only contributes to the recovery of marine habitats but also reinforces the resilience of ecosystems deeply connected to ocean health. Through its continued efforts in the Maldives, this initiative reflects Delta’s broader commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible global citizenship.

Progress Then and Now

Last year’s efforts contributed to the transplantation of 1,600 coral fragments, resulting in the creation of two large coral pyramid structures for Delta EMEA. Building on that success, this year’s collaboration with Reefscapers continued through the use of its unique coral frame technology—an effective method for nurturing and sustaining reef ecosystems.

This year, our collective impact grew even further. With the support of 311 Delta EMEA colleagues, a total of 17,049.1 kilometers were covered and 111.8 hours of exercise were logged. Their dedication led to the donation of 1,817 coral fragments, which we ultimately rounded up to 1,836. These fragments will be transplanted to construct two large pyramid-shaped coral frames. Once deployed off the coast of Furanafushi (4.249680° N, 73.540345° E), the frames will develop into vibrant, thriving marine habitats.

Ongoing Impact

Initial monitoring of the coral fragments planted in the previous year has shown promising early signs of growth. These developments reaffirm the tangible value of our ongoing commitment. As our coral reef continues to mature, we will share updates on its development and the broader ecological benefits it brings.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to all colleagues across the EMEA region who joined this journey and helped make our collaboration with Reefscapers a success once again. Your energy, passion, and dedication have once again turned movement into meaningful impact—restoring coral reefs, enriching marine life, and contributing to a healthier ocean.

Delta EMEA maintains a strong commitment to corporate social responsibility, taking consistent steps to support sustainability, biodiversity, and environmental conservation across the regions we serve.
